Greetings everyone. It's been awhile since I've posted anything. The wife and kids consume nearly all my time now. I still have all of my socket 7 hardware and one of these days I'll get back to it when time allows....
Seen this odd CPU while browsing Ebay recently, an AMD K6-2 337AFR!!! Just when you thought you seen it all something strange comes along. Has anyone heard of this CPU? Anyone want to speculate what FSB this CPU runs at?
This is a pic I borrowed from the auction of the K6-2 337AFR. These ran at the 75 FSB (4.5x75). Up until now I had only thought Cyrix made CPU's to run on the 75 FSB.
AMD never officially released any K6 or K6-2 CPUs that were specified to run at a 75 MHz FSB. If you wanted to do so, you either ran an original K6 or an K6-2 AFR-66 out of spec, or you ran a Super 7 K6-2 below spec.
That K6-2 337 is either a remark (although I don't see any signs of that) by someone trying to create a "rarity," or it's a processor that they created for some OEM. I noticed the seller billed it as "rare," and also tagged a K6-2 380 the same way. But the 380 was a very common CPU found in store-bought PCs of that time, targeted against the Celeron 366. Nine out of 10 of them could be reset for 400 MHz without a problem.
You could sometimes get a real steal with those AMD OEM K6 chips if some of them hit the open market. Another one they sold a lot of of, around 2000, was the K6-III 333, which was certified for either 5*66 or 3.5*95. Every one of them, it seemed, would go 392 (3.5*112) on an FIC VA-503+ motherboard, at which speed they were not far from a stock K6-III 450, but about a third of the price.

I found a reference to the K6-2 337 as an IBM OEM part on another site. They seem to have been made from late 1998 to early 1999.
IBM during that time made a lot of 75 MHz bus systems, mostly based on Cyrix 6x86/MII processors. IBM had a license to make Cyrix chips and sell them under their own name, so they certainly would have had 75 MHz bus capable motherboards lying around. They probably ordered these K6-2s from AMD to create systems for customers who didn't want Cyrix processors, which were fine for most things but horrible with anything that puts demands on the FPU.
