  Software News
"The entertainment industry has always kept a wish list of the kinds of draconian policies they'd like to see implemented in a fantasy world where nobody questions them or disagrees with their practices. Frequently calling piracy a virus, companies like NBC and Viacom have often pushed for copyright filters to be embedded in networking hardware or even anti-virus software."

"This week a landmark verdict was handed down to RealNetworks with deep implications for fair use and personal property in America. The ruling wasn't about filesharing, piracy, or malicious computer use. Rather, it was fight over whether users should be able to make copies of digital content that they legal own. And in a precedent-setting decision, the media companies beat a small software vendor and fair use advocates and laid down an imposing decision -- copying DVDs that you own is illegal."

"Password Protector 2006 is a easy to use and very secure way to clean up password and user ID clutter, and makes having to guess forgotten passwords a thing of the past. Being able to use strong, safe passwords for all of your accounts that you don’t even have to remember is a definite plus, and even changing your passwords semi-regularly is made indrecibly easy to do."

"This is an honest, unbiased view (or as unbiased as I can be). Unlike most people, I not only test all the browsers, I test them all on the same computer as each other - grouped into Linux, Mac and Windows (using the same or equivalent hardware for each). This, I hope, gives an accurate comparison, not only of the browsers compared with each other, but for those that work on multiple platforms, it also gives a fairly accurate comparison of the different optimisations for each platform."

spacer.gif   OpenOffice: The Free Office Software Suite Everyone Should Know About

"With the newest 2.0.4 release of OpenOffice, Microsoft does have some competition against its Office suite, while WordPerfect, on the other hand, will definitely have a run for its money. Although this article is not going to be a review for OpenOffice.org per se, I am going to use OpenOffice as a starting point to illustrate the crux of my argument: basically, there are great products available at no cost to the consumer, but the problem is that the average consumer doesn't even know these products exist."

  Software News
"The latest Web browser from Microsoft has been available for just over a week, while a new version of Firefox for the Web 2.0 age was released just yesterday. Available in Firefox for ages, Internet Explorer 7.0 (IE7) now includes anti-phishing technology to prevent fraud, as well as a built-in search engine manager - and about time! But has Microsoft’s complacency allowed Firefox to gain too much - although deserved - market share (around 11 per cent)?"
